Purple Pain

Dear God in Heaven!  Why did I watch the BET Awards last night?  Oh that’s right.  Because they were honoring the other love of my life - Prince Rogers Nelson - with a Lifetime Achievement Award!  I should’ve known better than to fall for the okey-doke.

Some of last night’s better (okay, fantastic!) moments included:  Chris Brown’s MJ tribute – he did a great job!  El DeBarge!  Yeah, yeah, he looked a little….special, but his voice was on point and he took me back with his medley.  Oooooh, oooooh and I like it!  And of course, the recently released Clifford was there rocking the crowd with “Yeah Ya Know” and contributing to the painful-to-my-ears-because-of-Diddy-but-the-rest-is-okay “Hello Good Morning.” *Please note I was forced to add the preceeding sentence by a dearly beloved blogger whose name begins with the letters PSONYA.*

And now for the not so great moments.  That would be the entire rest of the show.  From Nikki M.inaj (ugh!) and her multitudinous wig/outfit changes to Puffy (ugh!), to J.anelle M.onae, T.rey S.ongz, A.licia K.eys and P.atti L.aBelle murdering my beloved’s songs, just boooo!  I’m not sure who the committee was that picked these folks but they should be FIRED!!!!!  And why didn’t they ask/beg/convince Prince to sing a song or 2 thousand???

That is all.

Oh wait, I did enjoy the DJ Kh.alid “All I Do Is Win” performance. But that’s mostly ’cause Aidan and Lovegirl – but especially Aidan – were going HARD with their dancing and musical stylings.

Did you watch?  Did you like?

*We’ll try for another trivia contest tomorrow.  Maybe.

  1. I missed it. I was supposed to be going to a viewing party, but they changed venues without informing me. I came home and did some work. I will catch it on a re-play.

  2. I didn’t watch the entire show but I was not impressed overall with the artists chosen to do the Prince tribute. Janelle Monet actually did the best out of all four to me. After seeing A.Keys last night, I’m pretty certain that she doesn’t sing as well as she would like us to believe. Once you resort to the Beyonce stop, drop and roll there’s no going back.

I too wondered why Prince didn’t perform. Perhaps he declined.

Loved seeing El but you already know that he was killing me with his ‘Grease’ and ‘Rat Pack’ ensembles.

Chris messed everything up for me with all that excessive snot nosed crying…..and that denim and diamonds jacket he had on.

    • Alicia Keys grates my nerves too. I can listen to her, but don’t like to watch her. Yeah, yeah, I’ve got issues.

You were cracking me up on FB!

Okay, so the snot slinging was a little much, but dude can dance! Which I didn’t know before Sunday night – I’m not exactly CB’s demographic…

  3. Aw. I loved it. The El Debarge throwback was phenomenal and I loved how Queen Latifah kept coming out as different versions of herself. Chris Brown did that!!! I was screaming when he came on stage and throughout the entire performance. I thought BET heard all our complaints about how wack it was last year and really delivered classy performances this time around.

    • I don’t even remember last year’s show – not sure if I watched it or not. Which I guess is a strong indication of how good it wasn’t. Or something like that :)

  4. I enjoyed Chris Brown’s performance. I too was disappointed that Prince did not perform. I enjoyed Nia and Lorenz’ Love Jones skit. That’s my movie! Overall I appreciated BET’s effort to step up their game. It was entertaining. The award almost means something know. LOL!

  5. I didnt watch it, but I am amused by the fact you called T.I. Clifford instead of TI. Hearing you say clifford made me think of the cartoon

  6. Mercy…did you call p out in PURPLE?

    That’s the business!

I haven’t seen the whole show, so I’ll reserve judgement.

    • Yep – I have a theme going on, Prince, purple, even worked in the phrase “dearly beloved.” I slay me….

You and Abe have the same assignment. Let me know what you think once you see the show!

  7. Twitter made that awards show one of the most hilarious of my life!! I generally avoid awards shows of all kinds but that was thoroughly amusing!

      • im with jameil , the twitter party was hilarious- I didnt even watch it and I still feel as though I know what happened

  8. I didn’t watch the vast majority of it but did catch the last 30 minutes or so. I liked Patti’s and Janelle Monae’s performances. Trey Songz bleating was almost as funny as the look on Prince’s face during his performance. He needs to get some lessons from Wyclef on how to bleat with passion. LOL. Can’t stand Nicki’s voice (unless I’m horny) or the way she raps but she sure is nice to look at.

It would’ve been nice if Prince performed but really it’s BET and BET doesn’t deserve a performance of that magnitude…ever.

  9. As far as the prince tribute goes the only person I did enjoy was Patti ( you really didn’t like her?) I don’t know Janelle monae and after the show she put on I don’t care to know her either lol. and who was the chick with the dream catcher necklace and huge hair? anyone? anyone?
