Tell Me Who’s Your Housekeeper And What You Keep In Your House

Alright y’all – in my never ending quest to organize my house – and presumably my life – I’m going to be doing a little (a lot?) of rearranging over the course of the next few weeks (months).  So, I’ve got questions.  Y’all got answers, right? Answer as many – or as few – as you like!  Let’s begin…

  • Do you have a pantry?
  • Do you keep your food – snacks, spaghetti, cereal, etc. – in original packaging or do you transfer into storage containers?  If you transfer, what type(s) of containers do you use?
  • How many of your kitchen cabinets are dedicated to everyday dishes?
  • Where do you store your special occasion dishes, servers, etc.?
  • How many extra sets of bedding do you have?
  • Do you save any of your child(s) schoolwork/drawings/etc?  How do you store it?
  • How do you store your shoes?
  • How do you store your jewelry?
  • On a scale of 1-5 how organized would you say your home is?  Are you happy with that number?
  • Any storage/organizing tips you want to share with the class?

Thanks y’all!

  1. I have a pantry.

I keep most food in it’s original packaging, but put sugar and flour in the plastic containers(I got mine from Target! lol)

Everyday dishes and cups/glasses are in one cabinet.

I don’t really have special occasion dishes/servers yet *hangs head in shame*

Everyone has 2-3 extra sets of bedding for their room.

I got this plastic folder binder thingy (LOLL) from the $1 spot at Target and store school work/drawings there.

I keep ALL shoe boxes except for my sandals. Sandals/flip flops are kept in a large Steve Madden shopping bag.

I have two hanging jewelry organizers that hang in my closet, rubbermaid containers for my bracelets, a necklace holder and ring holder for necklaces and rings.

Hmm, I’d say my home is probably a 3. Soon it will be to a 5 though.

I did see one storage tip on Pinterest that I thought was SO COOL. This lady uses shower hooks to store her accessories in her closet. It was really cute.

  2. Some of this doesn’t apply to me yet because I don’t have the space but I’ve been gathering tips in my head from Real Simple & Martha Stewart for YEARS!

Do you have a pantry? No, but my mom & MIL do and I MISS IT!! I love organizing them! I like to keep all like items on the same shelf- cereal, pastas, cans & jars, foil/bags/paper towels
Do you keep your food – snacks, spaghetti, cereal, etc. – in original packaging or do you transfer into storage containers? If you transfer, what type(s) of containers do you use? I currently keep them in original packaging, rolling down the bag to close.
How many of your kitchen cabinets are dedicated to everyday dishes? 100%
Where do you store your special occasion dishes, servers, etc.? In a box in the living room. ¡¡AYE CARAMBA!! Storage AND cabinet space are at a premium here. That means I can’t display it or even put it in a cabinet. I want some of those quilted storage boxes Crate & Barrel has AND A PLACE TO PUT THEM!
How many extra sets of bedding do you have? 2. There’s just one bed for now. You can fold the extras and keep each set in one of the pillowcases. It keeps everything together.
Do you save any of your child(s) schoolwork/drawings/etc? How do you store it? I read you should take a picture of everything and keep only a few pieces per year.
How do you store your shoes? My shoes get packed away into suitcases as the seasons necessitate. They’re lined up by color and style (heel/flat) in the closet in-season.
How do you store your jewelry? I have two jewelery boxes. I saw a repurposed rake project that took off the handle and used the prongs to display necklaces. Loved it!
On a scale of 1-5 how organized would you say your home is? Are you happy with that number? 2. Not at all.
Any storage/organizing tips you want to share with the class? Try organizing one area or space every day. It becomes less overwhelming when you tackle one area at a time for 5-20 minutes per day.

  3. Do you have a pantry? Kind of. Ikea cabinet with pullouts.
Do you keep your food – snacks, spaghetti, cereal, etc. – in original packaging or do you transfer into storage containers? If you transfer, what type(s) of containers do you use? Original packages.
How many of your kitchen cabinets are dedicated to everyday dishes? 1 shelf in one cabinet
Where do you store your special occasion dishes, servers, etc.? China cabinet
How many extra sets of bedding do you have? 1
Do you save any of your child(s) schoolwork/drawings/etc? How do you store it? Yes, but she is 11 months, I abstain from storage questions.
How do you store your shoes? Large Ikea drawers/benches
How do you store your jewelry? Jewelry photo frame hanging on the wall by my bed
On a scale of 1-5 how organized would you say your home is? Are you happy with that number? 3. No.
Any storage/organizing tips you want to share with the class? Bulletin board are the best for appointment cards, phone numbers, etc.

  4. I have nothing to offer as far as home organizational skills are concerned. I am going to sit back and learn from the teachers because I think we are in the same predicament.

  5. Do you have a pantry?

No, but I am dying to have one. Our kitchen is super small and we have ZERO extra storage. Which means multiple trips to the grocery store (which I hate doing).

Do you keep your food – snacks, spaghetti, cereal, etc. – in original packaging or do you transfer into storage containers? If you transfer, what type(s) of containers do you use?

I have storage containers from Tupperware that are FREAKING AWESOME!!! Expensive? yes. Awesome? Absolutely. i don’t know if they save space or not. I definitely recommend the spaghetti storage container. It also measures for you.
How many of your kitchen cabinets are dedicated to everyday dishes?

Once again, we have a SUPER SMALL kitchen. There’s one cabinet (with two doors, so does that make it two cabinets?) that have plates, cups and glasses in it. One cabinet (with one door) for pots and one lazy susan style cabinet for counter appliances and storage containers.

Where do you store your special occasion dishes, servers, etc.?

What are those? Am I supposed to have some?

How many extra sets of bedding do you have?

For our bed, we have 3 extra sets of sheets and one extra comforter. The remaining blankets are stored in a huge Rubbermaid container with the hinged lid. It’s awesome to keep them in and keeps the creepy crawlies out. Buddha & SS each have one comforter and two sets of sheets each.

Do you save any of your child(s) schoolwork/drawings/etc? How do you store it?
I saved artwork from Buddha’s early years. The work I kept, I put in sheet protectors and it’s in a huge three-ring binder. Now that he’s in kindergarten, he comes home with a TON of paper. I plan to keep it for the marking period in a basket. At the end of the marking period, I will keep three or four and then toss the rest. Those that I keep will go in sheet protectors in the binder.

How do you store your shoes?

Some shoes I keep in the box like tennis shoes and some special occasion heels. My other everyday shoes are in the plastic shoe containers that you can see through. I would love to transfer ALL of my shoes to plastic containers but we’re pressed for space in this house.

How do you store your jewelry?

I have those small three drawer plastic sets (two of those, stacked) and I sort my jewelry by color. I hang my necklaces on the wall near the plastic drawers.

On a scale of 1-5 how organized would you say your home is? Are you happy with that number?

Considering the size (tiny) of our house, it’s a 3 on organization. I’d love for it to be a 4.5 but to get that, we would need to move. Most things are stored automatically because we have no space for them. I would love a closet organization system and a pantry to bump that number up but the size restriction is really the only hurdle. And that I have no interest whatsoever in reorganizing this house. A new one? Yes. This one? Not a chance.

Any storage/organizing tips you want to share with the class?

A subscription to Real Simple magazine. Or check them out from your library. They have great tips in there to help get you started. And their ideas are usually very simple and doable.

  6. ■Do you have a pantry? – Yes.
■Do you keep your food – snacks, spaghetti, cereal, etc. – in original packaging or do you transfer into storage containers? If you transfer, what type(s) of containers do you use?- No, I store in original packages. I have different shelves for different types of foods, etc. For instance all the cereal, oatmeal, boxed stuff one on shelf, but all canned goods on another one.
■How many of your kitchen cabinets are dedicated to everyday dishes?- I have one cabinet that is strictly for glasses, mugs, wine glasses, one cabinet for plates and saucers, one cabinet for bowls and tupperware containers, two cabinets that have pots and pans. I have 2 cabinets that have special occasion/nice dishes that I don’t use everyday.
■Where do you store your special occasion dishes, servers, etc.? – See above.
■How many extra sets of bedding do you have? I have about 6 extra sets for my bed outside of what is on there now. I have some sheets that I only use in the winter when it’s cold. Tyler has bunk beds and has 3 extra sets outside of what’son his bed now.
■Do you save any of your child(s) schoolwork/drawings/etc? How do you store it?- No, Only a few things and they are tacked up on my corkboard over my desk.
■How do you store your shoes?I keep all boxes they come in and they are stacked on the floor to the shelves of my closet.
■How do you store your jewelry? I have a couple plastic drawer organizer things (3 drawers) and I store all my jewelry in there by color. I also have some papertowel holders on my dresser that I stack bracelets on.
■On a scale of 1-5 how organized would you say your home is? Are you happy with that number? – I’d say 4. My closet can be organized better.
■Any storage/organizing tips you want to share with the class? – I bought a 5 shelf wire storage thing from Target earlier this year. I took the shelves and rod out of my guest room closet and put the storage wrack in there. THe shelves are deep so it stores a lot. I have all of my household supplies that I buy in bulk, like tissue, papertowels, extra comforters, boxes of books, etc. in that closet. It’s out of sight, but still convenient.

  7. I love answering your questions so here goes:
■Do you have a pantry? Yes
■Do you keep your food – snacks, spaghetti, cereal, etc. – in original packaging or do you transfer into storage containers? Mostly original packaging because now alot of them are resealable. If you transfer, what type(s) of containers do you use? In the past I always transferred rice, flour and sugar. I found a special container for rice, its plastic probably bought at walmart.
■How many of your kitchen cabinets are dedicated to everyday dishes? 1 – its spacious.
■Where do you store your special occasion dishes, servers, etc.? In a seperate cabinet; in my old house I kept the dining table set with some of my good china – also this way the table stayed neat and did not become the paper junk mail pile.
■How many extra sets of bedding do you have?lots; those Space saver bags come in handy for storing extra linens and they really save space.
■Do you save any of your child(s) schoolwork/drawings/etc? How do you store it? I use to, now I discreetly toss them when they’re not looking. I do keep the most sentimental, but all the others I toss.
■How do you store your shoes? I dont keep the boxes, takes up too much space which i dont have. I keep them lined up in my closet
■How do you store your jewelry? In a jewelry box (thats quite messy)
■On a scale of 1-5 how organized would you say your home is? 3. Are you happy with that number? Yes since I’ve decided that my house is for living and not a shrine.
■Any storage/organizing tips you want to share with the class? this is not my area of expertise but with 4 children and a husband, we all chip in to keep most things in their place.

  8. Do you have a pantry?
    Yes

Do you keep your food – snacks, spaghetti, cereal, etc. – in original packaging or do you transfer into storage containers? If you transfer, what type(s) of containers do you use?
I store in original packaging until I open it & then I use stackable storage containers that I got from Target & Bed, Bath & Beyond.

How many of your kitchen cabinets are dedicated to everyday dishes?
70% is for dishes, pots & pans

Where do you store your special occasion dishes, servers, etc.?
Some in the kitchen cabinets, some in the very bottom of the Pantry, and the remainder in a storage shelf that I bought & put in the Utility room just off the kitchen for things that I use very rarely.

How many extra sets of bedding do you have? 2 extra sets for each bed. Stored in each bedroom closet on the shelf.

Do you save any of your child(s) schoolwork/drawings/etc? How do you store it? I have stuff my nieces & nephew have sent me stored in a box in the guest room closet. Planning to be put in a scrapbook at some point. LOL.

How do you store your shoes?
In the original shoe boxes. If I buy shoes with no box, I put them in the shoe boxes that I have kept from when I purge shoes or donate them.

How do you store your jewelry?
I have some very nice stackable leather type trays lined with felt that I got from Bed Bath & Beyond. I love it because it looks like a leather box, the 6 trays are stackable, so you can pull each one out to see what you need. Each tray has sections for earrings, bracelets, necklaces, etc. It keeps them from getting dusty & keeps them organized & easier to find what I am looking for.

On a scale of 1-5 how organized would you say your home is? Are you happy with that number?
I would say a strong 3. I wish it was higher, but I have some stuff in my two guest room closets that just keep me from feeling totally organized & my garage is just a whole other story. LOL

Any storage/organizing tips you want to share with the class?
I bought these very nice hanging boxes from Bed, Bath & Beyond that I used to store my bags & purses in my closet. They are cloth & have side pockets & an open section. It allows me to easily see them visually & find the one I am looking for. I love them. I also love Bed, Bath & Beyond in general. You can get so many ideas just from browsing the store.

  9. Oooweee! I love organizing. This is RIGHT up my alley.

    Do you have a pantry?
No, not in my current apartment. I miss having one. I am thinking of turning my hall closet into a pantry.

Do you keep your food – snacks, spaghetti, cereal, etc. – in original packaging or do you transfer into storage containers? If you transfer, what type(s) of containers do you use?
Lately, I use original packaging. In the past I used plastic or glass containers but I got rid of a lot of stuff after my divorce and don’t have the space I used to.

How many of your kitchen cabinets are dedicated to everyday dishes? All of them.

Where do you store your special occasion dishes, servers, etc.? They are in my storage on the patio in rubbermaid containers.

How many extra sets of bedding do you have? 2.

Do you save any of your child(s) schoolwork/drawings/etc? How do you store it?

N/A but I love to keep mementos. I also have those in a rubbermaid box. I take pictures of what I can or scan them and then throw the item away. You can also get a big scrapbook with see through pockets and store stuff that way.

How do you store your shoes? In hanging shoe organizers in my closet.

How do you store your jewelry? In little plastic drawers and on a jewelry organizer. My makeup is in a plastic container as well. Here are two projects I am working on:

On a scale of 1-5 how organized would you say your home is? Are you happy with that number?
My home is probably a 3 but I am working on getting to a 5.

Any storage/organizing tips you want to share with the class?

Take advantage of the digital age. Rip CD’s to an external drive and get rid of the actual CD’s and cases. Scan as many documents as you can and shred, especially with old stuff- I scan my tax documents, W-2’s and anything else important. I store on my PC and somewhere else online so I can always access them.

Get rid of manuals/instructions by finding the PDF version on the internet.

Create household binders with important information- birthdays, anniversaries, important phone numbers, emergency info, car maintenance dates, doctors phone numbers and records of appointments, grocery lists, meal planners, blank calendars, utility account numbers and phone numbers. When all necessary information is easily accessible things run smoother. (http://organizing.yourway.net/using-a-home-management-notebook-the-ultimate-guide/)

Sign up for online access for your bills and credit cards and get e-bills. You generally get access to bills for a long time and you reduce the amount of paper around the home.

I love organizing!! Here are a few great sites:

  11. Do you have a pantry? Yes

Do you keep your food – snacks, spaghetti, cereal, etc. – in original packaging or do you transfer into storage containers? If you transfer, what type(s) of containers do you use? Most stay in original packaging until I open them and then place them into labelled ziploc bags that I stack on top of each other.

How many of your kitchen cabinets are dedicated to everyday dishes? One

Where do you store your special occasion dishes, servers, etc.? I keep them wrapped up and boxed up in a cabinet.

How many extra sets of bedding do you have? 5

Do you save any of your child(s) schoolwork/drawings/etc? How do you store it? Yes, I save them all. I bought a really nice decorative box that I store everything into. I display them on the fridge for a month and then store away.

How do you store your shoes? Each shoe is in a clear plastic shoe box. They are in order by season, and then type (summer, fall/winter, spring)

How do you store your jewelry? Earrings are placed in individual baskets by type (silvers, blacks and grays, earth tones, bright colors) and put into my tall jewelry drawer. My pearls, diamonds and rubies are kept in the original boxes and stored in a safe. Necklaces hang on what was a key rack. I have to big ones that I’ve attached the wall and hang them so that I can pull them as needed. They too are organized by type, color and length.

On a scale of 1-5 how organized would you say your home is? Are you happy with that number? 5 all day. I’m a neat freak and leave nothing out of order. It bothers me. I’m very happy happy with the current order. Even my 3 year old’s room is organized.

Any storage/organizing tips you want to share with the class? I live by the motto “there is a place for everything and everything in its place”. Baskets are your friends. Keep them nearby to put things into when you need to quickly cleanup. Use all the same hangers and color coordinator your clothing for easy pulling. Swamp clothes out by the season.

  12. This was sooooo helpful. I’m just going to learn from this and get a housekeeper. I hate cleaning. I’d say my house is a 2.75. We still have wedding presents in corners and upstairs unopened cause we don’t have the space in the kitchen.

  13. * Do you have a pantry? NO
    * Do you keep your food – snacks, spaghetti, cereal, etc. – in original packaging or do you transfer into storage containers? Things I use most are kept on the counter and stored in glass jars from Crate and Barrel. Those things are Rice, flour, sugar, tea. All else is usually in its box in the cabinets.
    * How many of your kitchen cabinets are dedicated to everyday dishes? 1/4.
    * Where do you store your special occasion dishes, servers, etc.? Serving dishes are in the kitchen cabinet and my china is at mother’s house.
    * How many extra sets of bedding do you have? Lots and lots.
    * Do you save any of your child(s) schoolwork/drawings/etc? How do you store it? Yes! Some are framed, the others are on the wall, the others are at my mother’s house. Others are in her scrapbook. I plan to laminate and bind her drawings. Someone told me I could hang a line in her room and use clothes pins to hang the art on that line.
    * How do you store your shoes? on the floor of the closets, they are not in boxes.
    * How do you store your jewelry? In the “walk in” closet in a re-purposed jewelry box, the everyday stuff is on my dresser in a small glass container
    * On a scale of 1-5 how organized would you say your home is? Are you happy with that number? 4. My son and spouse make getting to 5 a challenge. My daughter is a neat freak and is trying to get us to 5. I am mostly satisfied. In my home, there is a place for everything and everything is in its place. It makes me happy that I can tell my 3 year old to go and get something and she can. That makes me feel organized.

  14. Do you have a pantry? No but I want one. We currently use a storage shelving unit to house the extra “emergency” food.

Do you keep your food – snacks, spaghetti, cereal, etc. – in original packaging or do you transfer into storage containers? Transfer. We learned the hard way after leaving some spaghetti in the cabinet too long.

If you transfer, what type(s) of containers do you use? Basic clear containers.

How many of your kitchen cabinets are dedicated to everyday dishes? Three

Where do you store your special occasion dishes, servers, etc.? In the china cabinet.

How many extra sets of bedding do you have? 3 for our room and two for the guest room.

How do you store your shoes? Using the closet shelving….and the floor. LOL The only shoes I keep in boxes are my boots.

How do you store your jewelry? Jewelry boxes and a small portion of a drawer for the stuff that doesn’t fit.

On a scale of 1-5 how organized would you say your home is? Ehhhhhhhhh, I’ll give it a solid 3.

Are you happy with that number? Yep!

Any storage/organizing tips you want to share with the class? Make sure your filing system of personal documents makes sense. I’ve learned the hard way on this one as well. LOL

  15. ■Do you have a pantry? Yes

■How many extra sets of bedding do you have? 2 extra – kept in storage area under stairs
■Do you save any of your child(s) schoolwork/drawings/etc? Yes, she actually has a sturdy box we use as a keepsake box.
■How do you store your shoes? My shoes stay in my closets. I usually take them out of original box and put them in the rubbermaid containers. Boxes collapse too easily.
■How do you store your jewelry? I have an armoire and also a special case for silver jewelry
■On a scale of 1-5 how organized would you say your home is? 4.5 – I have Type A personality so everything has to be neat and organized. Are you happy with that number? yes
■Any storage/organizing tips you want to share with the class? Not really, I tend to go overboard so I wouldn’t want to push that on anyone else.

  16. Do you have a pantry? Yes

Do you keep your food – snacks, spaghetti, cereal, etc. – in original packaging or do you transfer into storage containers? If you transfer, what type(s) of containers do you use?Not anymore. I have different sized containers for different foods but items like flour, sugar, plain white rice, oatmeal, etc I keep in the same sized jars that I have purchased from wal.mart/tar.get.
How many of your kitchen cabinets are dedicated to everyday dishes? Four. One for coffee mugs, glasses; one for plates, bowls, saucers; on for storage and mixing bowls; and one for everyday wine and “drank” glasses
Where do you store your special occasion dishes, servers, etc.? I have shelves in my garage
How many extra sets of bedding do you have? Lots
Do you save any of your child(s) schoolwork/drawings/etc? How do you store it? Yes. Both girls have a storage bin with the things I want to keep. I am working on a display wall for special drawings
How do you store your shoes? In clear plastic shoe bins I get from the dollar store or BigLots. I LOVE how neat and orderly they look
How do you store your jewelry? armoire but I need another method
On a scale of 1-5 how organized would you say your home is? Are you happy with that number? 3…not happy but working to improve it
Any storage/organizing tips you want to share with the class? A label machine is YOUR FRIEND! You gon wanna label everything! LOL. Mesh/wire baskets, plastic bins are super cheap at the dollar store or places like BigLots don’t get sucked into The ContainerStore…they are expensive and there is always a less expensive alternative. Oh Pinterest….girl…they have awesome organization ideas

  17. ■Do you have a pantry? Pantry….no. I have a whole 3500 sq building. It’s about 100 yards from the house, but everything is in there. Bulk purchases, industrial stove and fridges, deep freezers, seasonal clothes, laundry room, man-cave, playroom….yeah.
■Do you keep your food – snacks, spaghetti, cereal, etc. – in original packaging or do you transfer into storage containers? If you transfer, what type(s) of containers do you use? I transfer to another container. Clear glass containers that have the ingrediant etched onto it. Cereal goes into a hotel dispenser type thing. This cuts down on the kids from closing the box, but leaving the cereal bag open and stale Cheerios.
■How many of your kitchen cabinets are dedicated to everyday dishes? One….it has tree levels. Plates and bowls, glasses and mugs, leftover containers.
■Where do you store your special occasion dishes, servers, etc.? I don’t have any.
■How many extra sets of bedding do you have?
3 for each bed, so 9 total.
■Do you save any of your child(s) schoolwork/drawings/etc? How do you store it?
Every nine weeks I let the girls chose what they want to be posted around the house, and the rest I scan into a file.
■How do you store your shoes? In the box they came in. Once upon a time, I was so organized that I had a poloroid picture of the shoes on the outside of the box, but no more.
■How do you store your jewelry? I can only wear jewlery that has no metal, so this may not work for everyone. I took a couple of empty oatmeal can and covered it with pretty scraps of wallpaper, I put my stretchy braclets (sp) on the outside and necklaces on the inside. In the other one, I bought those tiny rubbermaid food storage containers and put my earrings, rings, etc in those, and then put those inside the oatmeal can.
■On a scale of 1-5 how organized would you say your home is? Are you happy with that number? 4. I’m happy because the house is so small…it’s really no other way to be but organized.
■Any storage/organizing tips you want to share with the class? Sure.

In order to make my fall boots stand up and not slouch and lose their shape, I stuff them with empty eggs cartons. Sometimes I cut them in half and tape them together.

I buy a LOT of baskets. That way I can tidy up and stack the baskets. They help hide a multitude of sins. Even if I don’t put everything away right then, it’s somewhere together.

  18. We don’t have a proper pantry anymore, but we do have a 3-shelf case which serves the same purpose.

Do you keep your food – snacks, spaghetti, cereal, etc. – in original packaging or do you transfer into storage containers? If you transfer, what type(s) of containers do you use?

Most food is kept in original packaging. The only exceptions are rice, sugar, and flour. Those are kept in glass and plastic containers.

How many of your kitchen cabinets are dedicated to everyday dishes?
Small kitchen means 99% cabinets are for everyday dishes. The inconvenient cabinets atop the fridge house items that are used infrequently.

Where do you store your special occasion dishes, servers, etc.?
These are kept in a huge breakfront in the dining room.

How many extra sets of bedding do you have?
I think I’m down to 2 extra sets. Waiting for a good sale and a closet remodel to get more.

Do you save any of your child(s) schoolwork/drawings/etc? How do you store it?
    N/A

How do you store your shoes?

Shoes are stored in plastic shoe boxes in the closet. Until the remodel is done, my off-season shoes are in a storage container ;-/

How do you store your jewelry?
My jewelry is kept on displays so I can see them and access them easily. Here’s a link to the initial setup of my displays (http://aunaptural.wordpress.com/2008/10/11/jewelry-displays-2/). I have since added more professional bracelet displays to house my huge collection of bangles and cuffs.

On a scale of 1-5 how organized would you say your home is?
    Ehhh. I think it’s a 2 1/2. Still trying to fit 2 apartments into 1 house (don’t ask).

Are you happy with that number?
Nope. It’s driving me nuts not to have the full use of my closet.

Any storage/organizing tips you want to share with the class?
Do not go out and buy anything to organize your home until you’ve figured out how it is you actually function in that space. This will give you a better idea as to what your needs are. Often, I’ve found that many of the organizational gadgets really didn’t fit my lifestyle, so I had to create my own or improvise (see, jewelry displays). Make it work for you.
